Michael & Cookie walking, new quilt loaded

Michael and Cookie left for a walk first thing Sunday morning (9/29), and ran into some friends who sent this pic:

When he got home, he made me breakfast so that I could have enough energy to tackle my day:

can you tell we're out of spinach??

I headed to the studio to see what I was going to start.  I only have one more customer quilt to complete before loading up some of my own, so I jumped on that:

After I got it basted, I spent way too long on the internet.  I think I’ve become obsessed with cookie cups  :~).  I’ve been collecting/pinning many recipes over the past couple of months, but since making them with Inez (for the small lemon cups), I really want to make more.  I spent a lot of time looking for chocolate shells as I didn’t like the recipe we used for the caramel mini-tarts we made and I think I found a good recipe….I hope to try it out on Wednesday to use up the leftover caramel sauce from the week with Inez.

I also spent time looking for a caramel (rather than caramel sauce) recipe.  For the Fiber Floozies retreat, I made cookies that were a shortbread base, caramel layer and then chocolate top.  Even though I kept them in the fridge…the caramel sauce remained way too soft and continued to ooze out until the container was a complete mess and it was difficult to get even a portion of a cookie out.

Well, after goofing around for far too long on PINTEREST, I finally got my butt in gear and started to set up the program for the newest quilt and that’s where I got stopped.  I know my customer does not want very dense quilting, but the pattern that was picked will be very dense.  I spent a bit of time on the internet trying to find something with less stitches, and sent off an email to see what she wanted.  She got back to me right away and I purchased a new pattern, got the bobbins wound and kicked everything off:

can you tell?  It's oak leaves and acorns...perfect for this fall colored quilt

While that was stitching out, once again I made a bit of progress on the leading quilt:

I really wanted to finish the quilting on the fall quilt, but by 6 PM I was getting tired and I don’t like to work on things then as it is all too easy to make a mistake.  So, I joined my honey for the last of the Chinese leftovers for dinner, before continuing to load up a new necklace while watching TV.

I have to tell you a funny story about our dinners.  The place where we order food is very definitely an ‘English as a second language’ kind of place.  I had asked my honey to get me extra sauce……well, my dinner never came with extra sauce….but it was EXTRA HOT!!!!  OMgoodness….so very different from the last time I got it, but so very good!!!  We may have to order it like that always  :~).

I have been a bit busy lately and have not been keeping up-to-date with things going on in the country.  I finally got caught up and spent a some time looking into what is going on with the White House vis-a-vis the phone call to the Ukraine.  How anyone can doubt that Trump continues to abuse his power and act like a dictator rather than a president of the United States is beyond me.  Do you want to be informed?  Here you go:

black/white quilt, shams

Michael left at 7:30 AM for golf here at SCCL on Saturday (9/28) and I continued to try to complete something….anything….on my list!!!

I was in the studio before 9 AM and kicked off quilting once again on the black/white quilt.  I finally found a beautiful heart pattern that I love….I’m just sorry you can’t even see it on the quilt!  I couldn’t really work on anything else while the quilting was going on as the quilt needed a lot of babysitting, but by 11 AM it was done!!!

I paused for an egg/cheese/toast for my brunch, and then continued to weave in all of the bobbin ends (I had several thread breaks for no apparent reason, so had additional ends besides the 6 bobbins), ripped out my basting stitches (REALLY hard to see on this quilt) and trimmed the quilt:

Michael came home at 2 PM…low man with a score of 86….very happy!!!

I continued with my quilting theme and loaded up 2 pillow shams for my next customer quilt:

What a difference….from the very modern black & white quilt, to the very old fashioned pillow shams with an old fashioned (at least to me) pattern as well, that I think looks fabulous on the shams:

I got a tiny bit more done on the leading quilt:

and also managed to finish up a few more 4 patches on my leaders and enders project:

I finished up quilting on both shams

and got them off of the frame and cleaned up before joining my honey around 7:30 PM.

more leading, table runner, Chinese, camping quilt

I was up early on Friday (9/27) but it took several hours to get through my emails, update some recipes and get my blog out.  By the way….speaking of recipes….Inez has already sent me the first recipe for BAKING WITH INEZ 2020 TOUR….stay tuned  :~).  Yet more opportunities to taste great things next year!!!  I finally made it to my studio around 10 AM.  We have nothing planned for the next 3 days, and now that I’m not baking every day, I hope to sew/quilt my brains out  :~).  To that end, I continued quilting on the black/white quilt.

I had to go WAY back in my entries to find my current list to see what I need to be working on…here it is again:

-borders for my quilt with brown leading    DONE!

-binding for first leaded quilt (8 strips)      DONE!

-second leaded quilt currently on design wall

-borders for second leaded quilt

-binding for second leaded quilt (8 strips)   DONE!

-QoV fpf started at retreat, all blocks done

-borders for QoV fpf

-binding for QoV fpf

-snowball quilt

-borders for snowball quilt

-binding for snowball quilt

-beds for animal shelter

-binding and label for purple quilt

-keep up with any customer quilts that come in   ongoing….currently
one down and three to go!

The only thing to change was adding another customer quilt to the list!  I had hoped to have the black/white quilt done by the end of the day, but still have 4 more rows to go  :~(.  I continued to work on the leading quilt:

Lucy had to check it out

but it is slow going as I had many interruptions.

Andi stopped by in the afternoon because I offered to donate a door prize for a veteran’s dinner coming up at the beginning of November.  I figured people will be thinking about Thanksgiving then, so I gave her a table runner:

and Michael wrote a check for a donation since we can’t attend the dinner.  And Susie stopped by for a small serving of tiramisu….and pronounced it yummy!!!  I think she really liked the subtle orange flavor.  I spent a good bit of time on the phone, trying to set something up for Michael to no avail….dealing with hospitals and doctors is frequently VERY frustrating!!!  He is having a heart cath next Tuesday, and we are both very anxious about it….so all prayers are welcome.

So, between Janice’s pretty Carolina Scrap Quilt, and another very similar quilt I saw on PINTEREST this morning, I was inspired to get out my 2 inch squares for a leaders and enders project of 4 patches while I am continuing to sew leading on the design wall quilt.  By the end of the day, I had these:

Several people asked for a totaling of everything Inez and I made while she was here.  They were all new recipes.  We made a lemon tart and also made mini-tarts (new sugar cookie crust recipe and not on our original list).    We made a Chocolate Truffle Torte, Tiramisu, Cream Cheese Mints (4 different flavors and colors), truffles (not on the original list), Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake Tartlets (but we didn’t do the cheesecake part….didn’t seem like the small amount on the tarts would have added anything), Double Chocolate Macaroons, Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Ganache (not on the original list, and Inez made them last year, but I had not) and Apricot Cream Cheese Scones.

I had such a good time baking all of this stuff with Inez….it’s just not the same as doing it all alone  :~).  We didn’t get to the Braided Lemon Bread, nor the Ricotta Gnocci, but I still hope to make the gnocci on my own….we’ll see.

We had Chinese for dinner (Michael ordered pot stickers, what an unexpected treat to go with our egg & spring rolls),

and spent the evening watching some new shows to decide whether or not we’re going to keep them….we tape everything and then watch them and decide what to keep watching.

A request:

I need to have a chair re-upholstered....has anyone local had that done and could you please call/email/comment on the blog with a name and number if you were pleased with the result??

Remember I went over to Kristen's house on Wednesday for a quilt consultation?  Well, she has finished the quilt and it is as cute as anything:

SHQ Show & Tell, new sewing machine

Michael was up and out early for golf at Chester on Thursday (9/26), while I followed a bit more slowly.  I got to quilting early to set up as I was a hosting quilter for today.  Mary B came in and said she LOVED THE DREAM DAUGHTER…..I’ve put it on hold for Loree  :~).

Someone at quilting asked about my book reading….and yes, I generally read 2 – 3 books per week.  I like to find what are called ‘cozy mystery’ series and start ordering 2 – 3 books at a time from the library.  As I finish them, I bring them in for Loree…thank goodness we generally like the same types of books.  I also throw in self help books, diet books (if reading about dieting made you thin, I would be a wisp on the air!!), and other regular stories that people have recommended to me.  I only mention a few of them in the blog.....ones that really helped me or spoke to me.  I LOVE to read and fit it in wherever I can!

AND, I picked up my new sewing machine:

it's an older Kenmore

I want to make a few more rope totes, and I don’t think my lightweight Janome can handle them.  I don’t want to ruin my machine, so I asked Paula (who reads the classifieds every day) to keep an eye out for a machine for me.  She found one from a lady here, but to make a long story short, Reg looked at it and said it was absolutely not worth buying (it was all rusted).  Shortly after that a friend of Loree’s gave Loree a machine that she wanted to get rid of.  Reg checked it all out and said it was a great machine.  Loree was not interested in keeping it (well, actually she WAS interested…but was trying to be sensible and not end up with any more machines  :~) and when she said ‘no’, Reg said he was going to sell it.  Loree said ‘hold on…I know just the person’ and voila…I am now the proud owner of a new machine  :~).

We had an extra host at quilting, so I left after show and tell:

these blocks are teeny, tiny!

breast cancer qult

a stunning one block wonder out of Christmas fabric

I don't think the colors show well in this picture...it was much prettier in person

June is continuing to make pretty place mats out of leftovers for meals on wheels....recognize it BG??

and the start of another one

Gee continues to make really cute clothes

and hit the library and the grocery store on the way home.

I wanted to get home early anyway….I have chicken to use up and wanted to make Elephant Chicken Soup for my neighbor who had to go for another infusion today.  We have also been out of bread for about a week, so I needed to get that going as well.

Elephant Chicken Soup....yum!!

I’ve also given away around 10 small plates of baking goodies over the last couple of days (I'm now out of small plastic plates!!), and other than the lemon tart and the few things Michael wanted to eat, everything else is gone!!

I spent most of the afternoon making the soup and bread and delivered dinner to my neighbor around 5:30 PM (the soup and 1/2 a loaf of oatmeal bread).

Michael and I had leftovers for dinner and settled in for some TV watching.  I got the first season of STAR TREK:DISCOVERY from the library and we watched the first 3 episodes.  I’m disappointed to say that I don’t think we’ll watch the rest of the season….we both found it very dark.

Baking with Inez 2019 Tour....the end

Wednesday (9/25) was a bittersweet day….Inez and I had a quick breakfast, then it was off to the airport.  I think we had a wonderful week together, and although we didn’t bake everything on our list…we did throw in 2 extra things!!!  She has already sent me an email with a suggestion for the first item for next year!!!

I stopped at a furniture store on the way home and was home by 10:30 and got my blog out before 11:30…and then collapsed on the sofa for a very welcome nap!  I didn’t get to nap long before Michael was home from the golf range, and I headed over to Kristen’s for the afternoon.  She wanted me to look at a quilt she was loading up, and we haven’t seen each other in a long time, so there was lots to get caught up on.

I was home in time for leftovers for dinner and vegging on the couch in the evening.

I did manage to get one more block done on the leading quilt while Inez was here:

This quilt has been moving at a snail's pace...but now that I won't be baking as much, hopefully it will start to move faster  :~).

Janice has finished her Carolina Scrap Quilt and it is stunning:

Now she’s going to settle in to read THE DREAM DAUGHTER…can’t wait to see if she likes it.

Baking with Inez 201 Tour Day 7

Wednesday (9/25) was a whirlwind of a day.  I got rough puff pastry made in the morning, while Inez spent time thickening up our lemon curd.

I asked Michael to take a quick pic of us:

before Paula picked us up at 10:20 AM and we met Loree at the Lake House and headed into Charlotte for lunch at the Greenway.  We had a delightful time together and as always, the food was yummy:

Inez

Paula

Loree

the menu

butternut squash soup....OH SO YUMMY!!

Inez had the pork

I had chilli rellenos

Loree also had the pork

while Paula had the salmon/shrimp cakes

a very unusual dessert due to the fact that they have no baking students this semester!!

We were home by 2:30, but I had some intestinal issues and just could not get myself going on the almond galette (which would use the puff pastry from the morning).  Loree followed us home to pick up some treats as a partial thank you for my new sewing machine (story tomorrow hopefully):

Donnis showed up around 3 PM to shove some lemon tarts in her mouth:

She is always so much fun!!  She visited for just a bit, then had to take off before our other guests showed up at 4 PM.

finally...the lemon tart...

Anne

Susie

Paula

They tried everything….but we still have BUNCHES of food left….Inez thinks each recipe made many more ‘things’ than the recipes we used last year….luckily I have many people to give it to.  We had restaurant leftovers for dinner, then Michael picked up Larry and headed out to the movies, while Inez and I relaxed in front of the TV.
